                                                                                            Rabbits

Rabbits in Oklahoma are active all year

The most common calls we get are:

*Rabbits eating my flowers , Garden

              *Bare spots in my yard

              *Concerns for pets and children

   Biology

-The Eastern cotton tail rabbit is found in all county's in Oklahoma, and is the

most common rabbit in Oklahoma.

-They breed up to 5 times a year giving birth up to 3 - 8 young at a time.

-They weigh 1.5 lbs. - 4 pounds .

-15" - 18" in length.

-Their white cotton ball tail hairs gives them their name, "cotton tail rabbit "

Sexual maturity starts 2 -3 months of age,

Peak breeding occurs between February - September

One female rabbit can have 5 litters a year of 3 - 8 young each litter.

Wild cotton tail rabbits have a very short life span not exceeding 3 years.

   Behavior / Nesting

The mother rabbit will dig a hole in the ground line it with hair and grass , give birth , stash her baby's in the hole cover them up with grass

She will check on them and feed them different times of day and night.

The young are independent after 50 days.

They forage and fend for themselves after 3 weeks.

They are mostly Nocturnal , they feed all night

What diseases do they carry ?

Rabbits can spread Tularemia and Rabbit fever

They host Fleas , Ticks ,

   What do they eat ?

Rabbits are vegetarian animals eating mostly green plants :

Grasses ,                                   *Grain crops             *Straw berry's

Flowers ,                                    *Tree bark

Garden vegetables                  *Fruits ,

If you are finding bare spots in your yard it could be rabbit damage.

Cotton tail rabbits perform Coprophagy , meaning they re-ingest fecal pellets to reabsorb nutrients missed by the first digestion.

What can I do to keep them out ?

My advice is to hire a professional that many years experience removing rabbits.

Live trapping works the best

Critter proof fencing can be installed around the yard , Shed , Deck to exclude them.

To protect trees and shrubs a wire mesh can be wrapped around the trunks.

Will moth balls keep them away ?

No,

Don't waste your time on stinky moth balls or castor oil spray, Granular repellents.  They have very little impact or control , and no long lasting effects to control rabbits.

How do I get rid of them ?

My advice is to hire a professional trapper that has many years experience removing rabbits.

Live trapping is the best option.  when the animal goes in the trap , the door will shut down behind it unharmed.
